Samsung SCX 4500 Printer – A Good All-Round MFP

PC’s, TV’s and Mobile phones as well as a whole host of other electronic equipment have gone through and evolution in design in the past few years. The only piece of machinery that seems to have been left behind during this evolution is the humble, but ever so necessary multifunction printer. It sees they are still put together as cheaply as possible, and they look like hunks of plastic casing. Until the design of the Samsung SCX 4500 printer and Samsung SCX 4500 Toner that is!

Inkjets have certainly not done very well and at really cheap prices of below the $100 mark it hardly seems worth replacing ink cartridges when they run out. Laser printers on the other hand have done better. Samsung seem to have a much more responsible outlook when it comes to designing their equipment. They offer products that are reasonably priced as well as good designs.

The Samsung SCX 4500 multifunction printer is a case in point, and really fits the profile of the “coolness factor”. It is a slimmed down, full feature, full functionality but powerful marvel of electronics design. It is a slim 13 x 15.5, x 6.5″ with a stylish exterior. It is simple to operate and incredibly quiet. In fact you are barely able to hear it when it is printing.

This MFP features touch sensitive controls, however some of the settings are limited. The software application for scanning and some of the printer functions is SmartThru and installation to Windows XP is a very simple process. Just make sure you have a USB cable, if you don’t you will have to buy one, but if you have an old printer you can use the cable from that. It takes about five minutes to set up and is ready to work. A printed page can be copied in about 10 seconds and there is very little warm up time required.

The paper cassette does not hold much paper and it is situated beneath the printer itself, but if it is compact you want, then its compact you get. The cost of the Samsung SCX 4500 MFP is about $300, and you have to expect a print quality which falls in line with the price tag.

Although the scanner function is relatively slow, it does produce a good quality image at an optical resolution of 600 x 2400 dpi. Toner is simply removed and replaced also, and grey-scale printing is completely passable.

If you re looking for a good home use printer this Samsung product will pass the test. It does not come with a USB drive or built in Ethernet, which makes it not really suitable as a networked printer. But who really cares, if you want style in a printer, then you are going to have to live with a couple of trade-offs. Print speeds at 16 pages a minute is still behind the competition, but you can’t have everything, can you?
