Most computer user will have many passwords. Webmail, shopping, banking, social networking and many others. This is a guide to help you in strengthening your passwords and password storage. How to Make Safe Passwords

Make a password with the following: -At least 8 characters long -One or more numbers -Capitals and lowercase.

Passwords with difficult combinations make it harder for password hackers using special software to decipher your password.

Do not use as a password anything which can be guessed such as birthdays, children’s names, given or surnames or pets names. Do not choose words or phrases that can be easily guessed or are in a dictionary. Do not use Sports Clubs. Never use the same password for every website.

Good password practices

Never give out your password to ANYBODY including at work.

One tactic used by those with malicious intent is calling up and claiming to be from the computer support staff. Another tactic is to send emails with a link to what looks like a legitimate site; this is known as “phishing.” Always visit Sites using your favourites not through an email link.

Look out for people watching what you type as you enter your password. If you use the internet to purchase things make sure that that the site uses some type of secured method of encryption. This is usually indicated by the Website address starting https not http.

How to automatically fill in your passwords

It is best to memorize your passwords, however if you have literally scores or even hundreds of passwords from work, webmail, online shopping and Banking and you do not have a photographic memory, you may decide to write them down and keep them in your wallet or even a desk drawer by your computer. This is obviously not very secure in the event of theft or burglary.

Another method is to allow Windows (and other Operating Systems) to automatically fill in the data. This however is still not secure because your passwords are stored in clear text on your Computer making it easy if your Computer does not have up to date security systems for malicious code such as spyware, Trojans and worms to steal your passwords and account information. They could also be gained easily by a burglar or anybody gaining access to your Computer

The better way is to use Password Software. All of these encrypt your passwords and they can only be accessed by entering a Master Password which is the only one you have to remember. The best of these such as Roboform and Handy Password will –

* Save your passwords and user names

* fill in your login, but only on the real site attached to the saved login.

* generate complex difficult to guess passwords.

* Fill your address details and card details into online forms when you require.

* For backup you can save the file containing your encrypted passwords to a separate disc or hard drive or online backup system.

The greatest thing you can do to protect your password is to be aware that all the time there are people out there who would love to get hold of some or all of your accounts. It is not always criminals looking for you banking information; sometimes it is just curious people who happen upon your username & password. It may even be someone you know. Take care.
