Become a Great Female Bartender

The hard part about being a bartender is figuring out who is drunk and who is just stupid, Richard Braunstein. A quick smile, a quicker wit and the quickest drink are some of the qualities you’ll need to be a great bartender. Though this career isn’t for everyone, those who choose to make this career choice will benefit from reading the following tips and tricks.

In the bartending beauty pageant of life, Ms. Congeniality will always wear the crown. Sure, being gorgeous will always help and grab attention. Keeping the attention is the trick. Personality is the single most important quality a great bartender will possess. Being easy to talk to, non-judgmental, a good listener and generally a nice person will take you very far.

Though this may seem obvious, you need to be clean to serve drinks. Even the least discerning patrons don’t want to get sick or be turned off. The more common dilemmas for female bartenders are the hair and fingernails. Many women like to have long hair and nails. Though I’m not suggesting that you’ll need to go out and cut everything short, just be mindful of keeping hair out of drinks and fingernails out of fruit and garnish trays.

Money makes the world go ’round and in the world of the bartender, cash is king. Though the use of plastic has steadily increased, cash is still the language of the bar. To that end, you’ll need to make sure your money handling skills are very sharp. Always take time to count your cash. I cannot stress this enough. Make sure you always keep your draw closed when not in use, hide or secure your tips, and never use the honor system. When you are behind the bar, you are in charge of the room, the bar and the business for the night. Act accordingly.

A great bartender will know how to make most common drinks without looking them up, which scotch to recommend and how sweet or dry the white wine will be. Basically, you should be very familiar with what you are serving or what you have available. Fortunately, your knowledge does not have to be from personal experience. Reading literature or asking around can usually help your knowledge base increase. Not only will this make you more efficient, but it will help your gratuities increase.

One of the most uniform human characteristics is the need to be acknowledged. The gender, age, race, culture does not matter. People like to be acknowledged. The simple act of telling a patron that you are coming, either verbally or non-verbally, will affirm to him that you are on your way. Being efficient, even if you are not yet available, will be one of the best skills you can bring to the job. Be courteous and quick and patrons will truly appreciate you. Ultimately you will increase the number of your gratuities as well. More drinks, more tips. As they say in sales, it is a numbers game.

Many bars see the potential behind hiring the fairer sex to work the bar. Most patrons are male and having a female bartender can encourage loyalty quickly. However, being female isn’t enough to maintain a great bartending gig. Utilizing the tips above will help you make the most of your new career.
