Get a Job in the Business Intelligence Field

There are so many industries and fields where getting a job right now would be incredibly difficult. If you are job searching, it would be in your best interest to focus on a field where people are not only hiring, but hiring on a large scale. The field of business intelligence is one such area. Company’s are committing large amounts of money to their business intelligence programs because of the valuable knowledge and information they help the organization obtain.

Because of the growth of Business Intelligence, jobs are in the area are naturally on the rise. If you have experience doing business intelligence work, you are currently in high demand and should take full advantage of it. Even if you have a job, it never hurts to review other options that are out there for you. If you don’t have experience with Business Intelligence, fret not. The truth is, you don’t need business intelligence experience to land a business intelligence job. You just need to be able to think smart and relate your other experience to BI; I will show you how.

Even if you havent done business intelligence work before, you may have worked in related fields that can immediately transfer over. Have you ever worked as a data or business analyst? How about a financial analyst? These are very common titles used in organizations, and if you have done the work associated with these titles, you are likely well on your way to working in business intelligence.

Much of the work done for business intelligence takes place in very sophisticated tools. Many software vendors have built special tools that will look into your data to develop very intelligent relationships, analytics, and predictions, if you configure it to look in the right places. In order to be successful in business intelligence, you have to have a willingness to become a power use with the tools that the organization you work for has selected.

Business intelligence tools are very advanced. They can connect to many different types of data storage systems; from excel, to db2, sql server, access, and txt – it can analyze these data sources for valuable bits of information that a human would never be able to identify. Using sophisticated algorithms that are built into the tools, they can then provide lots of helpful information. It then becomes the analysts job to wade through this information and measure its worth. Once that it complete, it should be formatted and presented to those that would benefit most from learning the new knowledge gained.

Presenting is a critical piece to business intelligence. When trying to land a BI job, stress your ability to interface with executives and work across the many different areas of business within the company. Business Intelligence has many touch-points across a companys lines of business, and it is important that the interviewer be comfortable with the thought of you talking with sales, marketing, IT, and the executives.

There are many skills needed in a business intelligence job, but you probably already have many of them! It is important that you focus on the skills you have from your past that directly translate to what youll be working on in a business intelligence job. Read the job description, carefully pay attention to the interviewers words, and read up on the company so that in an interview youll be well prepared to discuss how your skills and abilities will allow you to complete the job of a business intelligence analyst.
