It’s a tough question to answer, and one I hear all the time: Which paper stock should I choose for my book? And although it’s a tough question, it is an important one because the paper you choose will tell your potential buyer what kind of book this is. Go too cheap, you might lose some buyers to a different title. Go too expensive, you just wasted your money.

Book paper weights are different than the paper weight measurements you will see in an office supply store. A 20# bond that you would find at Staples is similar to a 50# offset at a book printer. A 24# bond is similar to 60# offset, 28# is similar to 70# offset, etc.

Most black & white books with no photos are printed on either 50# or 60# offset. Going with 50# is adequate for most books and will save you some money. However, if you want your book to have a nicer feel to it, check out the extra cost for 60#. It might be worth it to you.

No matter what, be sure to ask your printer to send you paper samples. There is no substitute for feeling the paper in your hand to make sure your book has the feel you want it to have.

Now let’s assume your book is not as simple as a novel or a book with just black text. Maybe your book needs to be printed in full color. If that’s the case, you’ll want to use a paper stock that highlights the color better than a typical offset sheet. Glossy paper will usually do the trick.

Most full color books are printed overseas, where a different standard of paper measurement is used – grams per square meter (gsm). To calculate gsm, multiply the offset weight by approximately 1.5. So an 80# gloss sheet in the U.S. would be the same as a 120 gsm sheet overseas. You’ll definitely want a thicker paper stock for your color book versus a black & white book.

I’ll say it again: Samples, samples, samples. Don’t be shy about asking your printer for paper samples. It’s probably the most expensive choice you’ll make when printing your book; make sure you get it right!

Paperback covers overseas are usually printed using 250 gsm or 300 gsm cover stock. In the U.S. that translates to a 10 pt. C1S or 12 pt. C1S sheet. Also be sure to add gloss lamination to give your cover that extra pop!

Web publishing has a new face because of the blogging art. Just a few years ago, producing websites were considered to be extremely technical and couldn’t be done by a novice. But today, it’s a whole different story. Even an amateur who has very little knowledge about the web can create websites and publish them easily, because of blogs.

Blogging brought a new wave of online democracy, with everyone making use of the internet’s potential to view their opinions and increase web visitors. Social networking, interactivity and global community communications increased because of blogging. RSS feeds, a great feature available with most blogs, made it even easier to broadcast blog posts and encourage direct promotional opportunities among blog visitors.

Blogging became a money-generating concept through network building and email marketing. With the introduction of blog marketing techniques, people began to reduce the use of mass mailing, autoresponder and direct online advertising software. The need for link exchange methods are also much less for blog promotions, because many are attracted to interesting blogs and subscribe to it, in turn leading to more backlinks as well.

Many businesses are now turning to blogs to promote their products and services. Regardless of the industry, blogging and affiliate marketing are able to work together towards a common goal and earn you riches. Direct sales are also part of this, as the blogs provide advertising space.

If you feel the need to be outspoken about anything, you should get yourself a blog. By keeping a blog, anyone can talk about anything freely, without offending society. It’s your personal online space and no one has to read anything if they don’t like it. Choosing a topic is easy, especially when you know what you like. Blogs can be either all-inclusive or specific to a topic, depending on your preference. General blogs are more interesting to people from all walks of life.

Some blogs are specialised, such as travel, business, advertising, computer technology etc. These are enjoyable when you are interested in that exact field. A blog with anything and everything is very appealing to everyone, because the content is varied and anyone can join in at some point.

Guest authors are permitted to write content for some blogs. Readers are also encouraged to participate in making the blog interesting and comments, suggestions and forum contributions are all welcomed. These are blogs which boost worldwide community involvement.

No matter what you do and who you are, you can have your own blog, whether it’s for fun or for profit. You can spend a few hours a week or everyday just blogging about anything and everything. It’s a place to air your opinions , enjoy doing it and get like-minded people to chip in. The exchange of information is also another aspect of blogs. The new audio and video blogs have now increased global involvement through cross-border communication via blogging.

There are plenty of explanations of what biotechnology is, but the simplest one is that it is a field of study where biology is the foundation on which different kinds of technology are developed. Biotechnology is the basis of many different kinds of research in the fields of environment, food science, robotics, agriculture and medicine.

The human involvement in manipulating their environment is now at remarkable levels. From the most basic direct organism manipulations such as fermenting beer and culturing bacteria to advanced nucleotide-based organ regeneration and animal cloning, our knowledge and technology has advanced far beyond what anyone would’ve expected just a decade ago.

Biotechnology was in practice much before the actual term was used to describe it. The basics began with very simple scientific methods such as preserving foods for winter. The first fruit juice fermentation to produce alcohol is believed to have been done in 6000 BC. Back then, it was more of an art than an actual science.

The biotechnology we know today started gaining attention only about twenty years ago, when genetics were discovered to be the primary element for synthesizing essential proteins in an organism. The discovery of DNA and the related development of molecular biology was the true beginning of biotechnology as we know it now.

The eighties saw technological advances being made in leaps and bounds. The same was true in the case of biotechnology. Use of biotechnology in the fields of medicine and biological research became very important and more common. The concept of transgenic organisms was discovered, which led to vast advancement in the fields of disease resistance and productivity rates. Now we have plant-generated pharmaceuticals and production of antibiotics and insulin, as a direct result of this research.

There are three different kinds of biotechnology that are practiced – red biotechnology, white biotechnology and green biotechnology. Red biotechnology deals with the genetic alteration of microorganisms for use in the production of pharmaceutical and medical substances like vitamins, vaccines, antibiotics and proteins, as well as in the field of genome manipulation.

White Biotechnology is also known as bio-manufacturing and Grey Biotechnology. This is not yet a completely established field and involves manipulating live organisms to create important industrial chemicals. Some of the organisms used in these techniques include bacteria, enzymes, moulds and yeast.

Green Biotechnology is important in agriculture – making better produce that stays fresh and lasts longer, and is more nutritious. This is something people have been doing for a long time – making sturdier crops, like cross-bred wheat for example.

The environment includes everything, living component and non-living components. The environment, in itself, can be looked at as being composed of two areas – the first includes everything that humans do not have a part in. This includes animals and plants, the atmosphere and the soil, even microorganisms.

The second key environmental component constitutes anything and everything not specifically human-originated, but also lack clear boundaries while belonging to universal natural resources and physical phenomena. Among these are water, air, climate, energy, magnetism, electric charge and radiation.

The natural environment as we know it contrasts heavily with the built environment, which is everything that’s completely influenced by our own activity. If you take one geographical region, it can only be considered as a natural environment, if the human impact on it is at its minimum.

Wilderness, does not automatically mean a natural environment. Any area where there is no human interference at all is a wilderness. There are other conditions that need to be met if a region is to be considered a natural environment. National forests and nature reserves are considered to be part of the latter.

Our natural environment is under threat and it’s a commonly known fact. Arctic glaciers are melting, the hot climates are getting hotter and rains are falling out of season. The role of natural environmentalist groups are very relevant in this situation. They broaden the horizons for actions and policies on preserving the environment to be enforced by governments and society. Preserving the environment includes protecting what remains, restoring and extending the natural environment (some areas were previously occupied by humans and are now desolate, creating new wilderness areas).

There are some common goals that these groups are working towards – reduction of pollution, cleaning up the atmosphere, using recyclable material and actually recycling them, preserving the non-renewable fuel pockets by using renewable energy sources, conserving water, land and air, making sure that habitats of animals are not wiped out and more species are not wiped off the Earth and maintaining the balance that the Earth needs.

With all the pollution that the earth has to face every day, there is every need to be concerned about our natural environment. Industrial plants, huge development projects – everything that is supposed to advance the human race sets the Earth back drastically. Global warming is just one of the many things we have to worry about.

Since the human race is responsible for much of what is threatening the environment, it is up to the human race to fix it, as well. The time to start is now and the best place to begin is home.

Time and tide may be two things that wait for nobody, but something else that nobody seems to be able to catch up with is technology. No matter what field you are in, whether it is media or business or medicine or travel or anything else, technology has made everyone’s life a lot easier. Of all the fields, information technology has been the fastest developing.

Information technology is what makes our lives so much easier and overwhelmingly simple today. Unlike 20 years ago, when people had to store endless files in cabinets, wait for months for mail and rely on the nearby shops to buy everything they need, we now have virtual file storage, email and instant messaging and almost all businesses have an online presence and buying is simply a matter of having a credit card or online secure payment method.

The internet has connected the whole world. Just about everything can be done online now. Something as simple as framing a document to something as complex as an auction or a complex equation can be done online. Audio and videos can be streamed and watched by people all over the world. With IT, the concept of the global village is closer to being true than ever before.

No matter where you look, you will find information technology. Computer networking, application development, managing websites and databases all depend on IT.

Communication – It began with simple peer-to-peer messages via the command prompt and has evolved to become VoIP technology and video conferencing. The passage of 20 years saw a remarkable advance in instant communication, making ordinary communication such as telegrams and mail near obsolete. The internet has become the primary instant communication method, with email and instant messaging applications used by both businesses and individuals. The ability to integrate internet capabilities in mobile phones have also contributed heavily to this advancement.

E-Commerce – Who hasn’t heard of ebay, amazon, paypal and clickbank? Promoting, buying and selling online are no longer seen as something phenomenal. It’s quite the ordinary way to find anything, anytime and get it delivered right to your doorstep. Through web-based order forms and secure payment gateways, online stores give enough leverage for you to become an avid shopper without ever leaving home.

Devices: Every device has to be constantly improved to stay in the market. Everything is going digital, in fact – after all, if alarms can wake you up by telling you exactly what time it is and schedulers can remind you of what you should be doing, why shouldn’t refrigerators, soon, suggest what you should eat if you’re on a diet? Manufacturers for everything are searching for new ideas. Integrated GPRS to connect to the net, broadband connections – brands like LG and Samsung are at the forefront in such research.

So, as technology develops and incidentally helps the internet grow, the achievements awaiting the human race throughout time are limitless.

If you are a constant web user, you know what a blog is and what it represents. But for someone with less knowledge about the internet, how would you explain a blog? A blog is just like a simple website, with a theme and the content is presented in a temporal order. Owning a blog means you can write about anything you want, as long as it’s related to your blog topic and continuously add and maintain the content as you desire. The latest content posted is always displayed above all the other posts.

Blogging is something similar to keeping a journal that’s visible to the whole online community. The idea is to share events, daily happenings and incidents with various readers. Blogs are excellent web traffic attractors, because they act as a place for the global community to gather in one place and find out information and discuss various interests. Blogging is a veritable tool in online marketing and helps to bring in like-minded people from everywhere to a single venue.

During the past 5 to 6 years, blogs have become a sensationalised platform, with popular blogs attracting thousands of visitors on a daily basis. Sharing ideas, opinions and keeping up with the world events are some of the greatest advantages of blogging.

Most people create blogs with the sole aim of attracting numerous readers, because when there are many readers sharing their own view points in a single place, the opportunity for making a profit through marketing products and services to them is very high. Plenty of businesses and individuals depend on constant blog traffic to market products and services to online consumers.

Would you like to have your own blog? There are no limitations on how many blogs you can maintain, so you can just go ahead and sign-up for as many as you want. Writing for a blog requires you to spend some time and effort on it, particularly if you want everyone surfing the internet to know who you are. Keeping your blog posts new and constantly updated will make it more interesting and bring in more visitors. Some blogging tips are given below for your consideration.

Chose an interesting topic: Find a niche that interests you and is popular among the general web users. Make sure you have adequate knowledge about what you choose, so you can talk about it confidently.

Speak, don’t write: Use a conversational tone to get your ideas across. Don’t be boring and monotonous and don’t use words which require a dictionary to find the meaning.

Decide how often to blog: You should decide beforehand about how often you’ll blog. Daily is better, but update your content at least once a week.
