Decriminalizing streetwalking is the right thing to do

Streetwalking has been around since the beginning of time. There were streetwalkers throughout history, and today is no different. Many argue that streetwalking cannot be ended, and that instead, it should be made legal so we can control and benefit from it rather than waste money trying to shut it down. Others disagree, saying that streetwalking is a bad thing and it should not be made legal, and even if it seems we are failing to end it, we should still continue. Various countries have responded to streetwalking in different ways. In the US, streetwalking is illegal, but in Europe, some countries like the Netherlands and Germany consider it a business and have made it legal.

There are many opinions regarding streetwalking and its tangled moray of moral problems. Here is a quick summary of the pros of legalizing streetwalking:

1. If streetwalking is between consenting adults, then we should not discriminate against it. It is a service industry like any other where people exchange skills for money. People just happen to be touchy about it because the service is sexual.

2. We are not supposed to show prejudice against people because we don’t like what they do for a job, but when the government steps in and arrests and fines people, that is exactly what they are doing.

3. By legalizing streetwalking and requiring accountability and records of employers and employees, we will be better able to protect children and those forced into prostitution against their will.

4. People caught breaking the streetwalking laws will be able to be prosecuted. Pimps will not be able to abuse their streetwalkers with impunity.

5. New laws in streetwalking will give prostitutes the rights and protection they are entitled to, as members of an industry. Rates of rape, violence and abuse should go down.

6. Streetwalking can help the economy, as the government will get money from taxes and there will be new job opportunities.

7. Current streetwalking laws violate an individuals privacy by imposing regulations on the private behavior of consenting adults.

8. Legalizing streetwalking will allow the government to restrict streetwalking to certain areas and keep it there.

9. Streetwalking is usually run by criminals, and by decriminalizing it, we can make it respectable and let responsible people run it, not crooks.

10. The spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and AIDS can be slowed through legalizing streetwalking. Mandatory safe sex training, condom regulations, periodic testing and treatment would do wonders in terms of sexual health concerns.

11. We cannot stop streetwalking, as seen through various failed attempts to do so. Our next best hope is to legalize it.
