The Essential Steps To Take After Identity Theft

Identity theft can leave you feeling overwhelmed. It seems like so much that needs to be done. The effects do not have to be permanent. There are some simple steps to follow to alleviate the problem.

Initially, the crime needs to be reported. Contact your local police department and inquire about filing a police report. Next go to the Federal Trade Commission and report the crime as well. You can do it by phone or online. The record is important as you will need it later on.

Now it is time to get the word out to the credit bureaus. They will help in alerting future attempts to use your credit. If you place a credit fraud alert it will force new creditors to seek further proof before they can extend credit in your name. The big three credit bureaus are TransUnion, Experian ,and Equifax. The alert will last for three months. If you need more time then extend the time frame.

The third step is to order a credit report. Go over your credit report carefully and report any errors. Make sure you contact the credit reporting agency directly and in writing. Continue to monitor this to report any unauthorized activity as soon as it occurs.

The creditors from your credit report need to be contacted. Do not skip any and do it by phone and correspondence. Document any account changes and make sure your account is flagged for any future problems. if you have any fraudulent accounts they must be contacted immediately.

The next step is to prepare for the future. Change every password on any computer accounts. Do not use obvious passwords or the same one for several accounts. Keep a folder in a secure place with every new account number and vital information and the passwords.

You should not get a new social security number as that can make it difficult for new creditors to distinguish you as the victim rather than perpetrator. It is also unwise to cancel all your accounts since your credit will be shaky for a while after, but you should immediately close or freeze the accounts that have been tampered.

There are several steps to prevent future problems. Credit fraud is primarily done over the internet or through stolen documents. Restrict your online activity. Contact your creditors on the phone and never respond to emails and text messages asking for account information. A shredder is a great investment. Make sure all documents are shredded. It seems like the world is ending but you will overcome this problem.
