Is Professional Teeth Whitening Right For You?

Thanks to professional teeth whitening, teeth that are stained and discolored can regain their former whiteness easily and inexpensively. Why do teeth get stained and discolored in the first place? And what teeth whitening options do we have to deal with it? This article will attempt to answer these questions.

Teeth become stained and yellow for a variety of reasons. Aging is one factor. What you eat and drink is another. Blueberries, for example, are known to stain teeth. So is drinking coffee. A habit like smoking is a major factor contributing to discolored teeth. Finally, cracks in your teeth’s enamel is also a factor, as it allows the dentin beneath the surface to become discolored as well.

When it comes to the treatment of teeth that are discolored or stained, professional teeth whitening typically produces excellent results. The procedure itself is not complicated: it basically involves the application of a peroxide whitening gel to the surface of the teeth and, in the case of laser teeth whitening, the use of a small laser that activates the bleaching gel and makes it more effective. The entire procedure lasts anywhere from fifteen minutes to one hour, and many patients report outstanding results after only one treatment, although individuals with more serious staining and yellowing might require additional treatments.

Professional home teeth whitening treatments are a popular alternative to in office procedures and employ the use of home whitening kits provided by your dentist for use under his or her supervision. Professional home whitening kits typically contain a peroxide whitening solution and a set of custom teeth whitening trays, and have proven to be a less costly option for those who cannot afford the more expensive professional whitening treatment performed in the dentist’s office. On the negative side, home whitening treatments require multiple treatments over a longer time period and are not as effective as their in office counterparts.

An even less expensive option than either professional in-office whitening or professional home whitening is the use of store bought do-it-yourself whitening kits. These kits are readily available over-the-counter and include products such as teeth whitening strips, whitening toothpastes, gels, and lower strength peroxide bleaching solutions.

None of these home whitening products are as effective as their professional whitening alternatives. Whitening toothpaste, for instance, takes weeks to show results and even then the results are limited. Whitening strips, while somewhat more effective than toothpastes, produce results that are typically uneven. As a general rule, non professional home whitening products will whiten your teeth by three shades at most, and often less than that. Professional teeth whitening can result in teeth that are whitened by up to 10 shades, and sometimes more than that.

With all the teeth whitening choices that are available today, no one has to endure stained or discolored teeth if they do not want to. There is a treatment choice for every budget so that a whiter and brighter smile is within the reach of just about everyone.
